In the first game of the Hartford Vintage
Base Ball Invitational, the Taverneers played
the Hartford Senators on a hot, sticky, and
humid afternoon. With numerous lunch time
spectators watching the game in Bushnell Park,
the Taverneers played a strong game through the
mid-game when the Senators poured on the
hitting/fielding and outplayed the Taverneers.
Since the Senators were playing the Pittsfield
Hillies the following day in an ESPN televised
game, the Senators were playing with some new
players recruited for the ESPN game. The
Senators proved that their temporary roster was
a strong one with young college and ex-college
players dominating the lineup.
Despite this adversity, the Taverneers had
many great plays and hits. Taverneer
errors became problematic during the second half
of the game after the strong start. These
errors cost the Taverneers approximately 8 runs.
However, the difficulties faced by the
Taverneers in this game served to prepare the
team for the three subsequent tournament games
on July 3 and 4. Please read more about
the games on those days to learn how the
Taverneers ended up playing very well for
the remainder of the tournament.
