On a cloudy cool afternoon, the Providence Grays
traveled to Simsbury and were hosted by the
Taverneers in an exciting double header
featuring two eras of play, 1884 for Game 1 and
1873 for Game 2.
The Taverneers want to extend a special Thank
You to Dave Moore who sang the National Anthem
at the beginning of both games.
Game 1
The game was head to head for the first four
innings with excellent fielding by both teams.
The Taverneers, playing gloveless for the first
time, overcame their unfamiliarity with
barehanded play in the field and matched the
Grays with hits. In the fifth inning the
Grays had a hitting streak scoring 7 runs which
forced the Taverneers to play catch up for the
remainder of the game. While the
Taverneers continued to hit and score, they were
not able to cross the plate enough times to pull
the game back in their favor. Bryan "The
Kid" Marchinkoski pitched a strong early game
while Hank "The Hammer" Newman finished through
the ninth. Once again Duncan "The Judge"
MacKay had a very strong game behind the plate
with Brian Logan stepping in to complete the
game.
Game 2
The more developed version of the underhand era
rules (1873) made for a challenging game and the
Taverneers competed against the Grays with all
they had. With lots of hits and great
fielding (including another "Hidden Ball Trick"
by the Taverneers), the Taverneers worked hard
throughout the game chasing down hits and
knocking the ball around the infield and
outfield. The Taverneers were down by 3
runs in the bottom of the ninth and after a
multi-player hitting streak with two outs, they
tied the game 12-12. The teams went into
extra innings and the Taverneers won the game in
the bottom of the 10th with an exciting poke
into the outfield by Steve "Hands" Patrina to
drive in the winning run.
Unfortunately, however, throughout the day the
team suffered a few injuries with one pulled
hamstring, one dislocated finger and some
miscellaneous hand bruises (see below for
representative photos similar to the Taverneers'
injuries). Get better soon Taverneers team
members!
