On a beautiful afternoon in Columbia, CT with
100+ "cranks" at the Columbia Bicentennial
Celebration, the Simsbury Taverneers battled the
Columbia Base Ball Club using 1868 era rules.
The gloveless, underhand pitch, out on one
bounce style of play caused the Taverneers to
struggle for the first few innings after which
they got their rhythm and learned the strategy
of this very different version of base ball (the
Taverneers typically play 1886 era rules).
The Taverneers made many great hits, plays in
the field, and perpetrated some on the field
trickery using "hidden ball tags". Despite
their great play, the Taverneers lost the game
by one run after a devastating fall rounding
third by one Taverneer causing a double up on
third base to end the game with a one run
deficit.
The Taverneers showed their true athleticism
with some spectacular plays by several members
of the team including an in the park home run hit
by Hank "The Hammer" Newman that traveled over 350 feet.
Also of note was John "Lucky" Lucker with a
diving right field catch for an out followed by
a long throw home to catch the runner from third
trying to score - double play!
