An original member of the Simsbury Taverneers,
Ray "The Rainman" Vasas was offered a base ball
contract with the team after demonstrating his
throwing strength and accuracy at the annual
town-wide fair by hitting a bottle of moonshine
with a base ball from about 500 ft. During his
career Ray has also been known to hit a base
ball remarkably high and far which, on at least
one occasion, is thought to have caused it to
rain, thus garnering him the nickname of "The
Rainman."
Originally from Michigan, Ray moved to Simsbury,
Connecticut in the late 1860’s but soon found
himself in the Civil War manning the turrets on
the U.S.S. Monitor during the 1862 Battle of the
Ironclads. During the 1870’s Ray regularly
traveled by train to New York City to assist J.A.
Roebling in the design and early construction of
the Brooklyn Bridge, a new "suspension" bridge
over the East River. Today, Ray continues to
work a variety of innovative engineering
projects around New England but, more than
anything, "The Rainman" enjoys hearing the
Huzzah from the Taverneers' cranks on a warm
summer afternoon!! |
