Career:
Speedy spent his childhood diving
from the pier of his father’s ship building
workshop in New Bedford, Massachusetts. His
apprenticeship included the building of the
whaling ships Charles Edward,
Henry Taber, and the tragic Essex.
He moved to the City of New York at the age
of 16, where he signed with the Brooklyn
Atlantics, of the National Association, to
play base ball professionally. Two seasons
later he left the Atlantics for Brooklyn
Bridegrooms of the newly formed Players
League. With the demise of the Players
League the following summer he return to the
New England to resume his trade. Twelve
years later, he returns to the game of base
ball with the Taverneers of Simsbury.
