We will be going back
The Trinity UMC team plans to return with another medical mission to Senegal in
January 2006 but other groups are planning missions in the meantime. For more information contact Karen Ujereh at skujereh@sentoo.sn.
In the interim...
Other needs expressed by the Wellness Program are:
- To reopen the children's feeding centers in the villages. These are clearly needed, as all of the children the medical team saw were anemic and between 3 and 4 years growth retarded. These centers provide education for mothers in addition to providing food for the children. Four of these centers were closed due to lack of funds.
- Additional training for the Wellness Program volunteers staff and translators. Several of staff we relied upon would benefit from a 2-year certificate program available in Dakar, which would prepare them as "para-nurses" to evaluate patients themselves. This would greatly enhance the ability of the Wellness Program to follow-up on a regular basis with the patients that they see. These Wellness Program staff have the ability and the desire to take on these roles and the need is there. The cost is reasonable and the benefit would be substantial in terms of enhancing the health of the people in these communities.
- Supplying the Wellness Program with vitamins and non-prescription drugs is vital. A child diagnosed as anemic needs many months of vitamins to thrive. Our near-term concerns are to find affordable means to transport these materials from the USA into Senegal.
The Senegal Church is doing great work and is enthusiastically celebrated by its members and utilized by the community. Donations of time, money, battery-powered lab equipment, automatic blood pressure devices, etc. are welcome. Medical teams should bear in mind the limitations of space and translators. Anybody who travels to Senegal should bring an entire suitcase full of vitamins (with iron) and granola bars.
Making a monetary donation to support the needs
Donations of money are gratefully accepted. All donations go to benefit the Senegalese people (all travel expenses are borne by the team members). Make checks payable to "Trinity UMC" and put one of the following notes in the memo field:
- Senegal Medical Missions for donations that will be used to purchase vitamins, medical supplies and medical equipment to be left in Senegal for the Wellness Program.
- Senegal Surgical Fund for donations to support surgical procedures to remedy the condition of individual patients identified by the medical team.
- Senegal Wellness Program Education for donations to support practical education for the program staff and improve patient care year round (see above).
