BASIC MAP RULES

1. Properly identify all listed items including: Names of Countries, Cities, Physical Features, Water Bodies, etc.

2. One needs to correctly place all listed items

3. Use proper colors: Neutral countries/continents are colored either any shade of tan or grey.

4. Any shade of blue can ONLY be used to represent water bodies including: oceans, seas, gulfs, bays, rivers, lakes, etc. It CANNOT be used to color land or countries!

5. Include a Map Key on all maps! One needs to be very neat and colorful. The Map Key will include symbols for cities, rivers, and possibly special features such as: elevation, political boundries, and all other listed symbols. Place your MAP KEY in an area of the Map where the MAP KEY is not blocking any important item. Usually, one can find an open space such as in the middle of an ocean.

6. A Compass Rose is always needed. Be very neat and colorful

7. A 1/4" to 1" black border is always needed

8. Place your Name, Date, and Hour inside of the border at the lower right-hand corner. Be Neat!

9. You may use colored pencils, pens, crayons, markers, paint, cut outs, colored poster boards, etc. Be Neat!

10. Do not use black, white (represents ice caps or glaciers), tan, or gray as your main country/continent colors. Gray and Tan are used as neutral colors for countries/continents which border your particular country or continent.

11. Try to use as much color as possible so that your map may be seen at the back of the classroom or out in the hallway. Usually, the most colorful maps get the better grade.

12. You can use any of the following for making your lettering: felt pen, press-on letters, typed letters, letters from a printer, ink pen, etc. Always use black printed letters for all lettering on the map. One cannot use cursive writing anywhere on the map!

13. Rules for Capitalizing: Alphabet Letters of listed places are all capitalized for the following: MAP TITLE, MAP KEY, CONTINENTS, COUNTRIES, and OCEANS. Only capitalize the first letter for everything else!

14. One's border must be drawn neatly with a ruler.

15. The TITLE must be located either at the top and centered or within the MAP KEY.

16. Be sure to use the correct Map Type: Physical Map, Political Map, Special Purpose Map

18. A late map will cost you 100 points per day.

19. You may turn in your map earlier than expected.
