How to score
The blue square in the logo (above) is a frame with netting. The semicircular area in front of it is the forbidden zone. There’s one of these at each end of the court. You score a point for your team by throwing the ball at the net, without stepping in the zone, so that it rebounds and hits the floor outside the zone.
How to defend
When an opposing player shoots the ball at the frame, your team prevents the point from scoring by catching the rebound before the ball hits the floor. If you make the catch, your team takes possession and becomes the offense.
One of the first things every new player notices is that a ball thrown at the net from one side bounces off the net in the other direction, like a mirror’s reflection. A defender who keeps tabs on the ball’s position and moves to anticipate the mirror bounce will be in a good spot to catch the rebound.
How to fool the defense
Now that the defense knows what you’re up to, you need to get them out of position by moving the ball around before the shot. (Having said that, in the next part of this guide, we’ll go into some high-percentage shots that are harder to defend against.)
More rules to consider
A player can run three steps with the ball before passing or shooting, and a team is allowed up to three passes before someone has to shoot.
How not to defend
As a defender, you’re not allowed to block any opponent’s path or view, to distract an opponent, or to take away or intercept the ball. A defender’s only job is to anticipate the shot and be there to catch the rebound.
Sides
Either team can score a at either end of the court. This means the offense has scoring opportunities at both ends of the court, and the defense has to be ready to catch a rebound off either frame. But the offense has to watch out, too: a defender who catches a shot can toss the ball right back at the same frame. – Remember, when a defender catches a rebound, defense becomes offense. There is no pause in the play.
