NCOWS NATIONAL SHOOT RESULTS

The National Congress of Old West Shootists held the 2009 National Shoot at the Westside Sportsmen's Club, in Evansville, IN., on June 4, 5, and 6. Many members of the Scarlet Mask Vigilance Society attended the National Shoot, and they represented the posse very well. Scores from the National Shoot can be found on the following pages:

Main Match Scores, Side Match Scores

Bill Proctor is in the process of putting together a video of the National Shoot. For those that attended the shoot and would like a nice memento, or the folks that missed the shoot but would like to get in on the fun, check back here in a week or two, or visit Bill's Video web site http://www.perfecthatproductions.com/ for more details.

INAUGURAL SHOOT

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007, was our inaugural shoot. Following the Safety Talk at 9 am, the Main Match was held on three stages. After the Main Match there was a lunch break which featured a huge (and delicious) pot of chili made by Patricia Proctor. After lunch the shooters took part in a woods walk to test their hunting skills. Following the woodswalk some of the shooters adjourned to upper range for a little long range plinking at a buffalo silhouette place at about 350 yards.

We held our May Shoot on the 24th. We have posted the scores on the Results Page.

History of the Scarlet Mask Society

On October 6, 1866, the Reno Brothers, Frank, John, William, and Simeon, made history when they committed the world's first known peacetime train robbery. Over the next two years the Reno Brothers and their gang terrorized Indiana and the Midwest as far West as Iowa, and Missouri, where John Reno was captured by Pinkertons and imprisoned for 25 years.

To counter the Reno's reign of terror the citizens of Jackson County formed the Jackson County Vigilance Committee, which was also known as the Scarlet Mask Society because of the long red bandannas they wore. Between March of 1867, and the night of December 11-12, 1868, when they marched on the New Albany jail and hung three Reno Brothers and two of their gang members, the Scarlet Mask Society delivered on their promised of "a short shift and a hempen collar" to 13 members of the Reno Gang.
