Calculator Policy August 2001

Dear Parent and Math Student,

All of the up-to-standards texts make use of the calculator. It is a technology tool that all students need to use to be successful. As a result, we strongly recommend that each student purchase his or her own calculator. To make the best use of your calculator, you need to use it frequently. In this way you will eventually learn most of its functions and you will become proficient in its use. It is the student’s responsibility to learn how to operate his or her own calculator.

The MCAS exam requires the use of a calculator on two out of the three math sessions. You should be aware that calculators are permitted on the College Board examinations. They are required for the Calculus AP exam. You should look into what models are acceptable for you on the SAT’s since there are guidelines to follow. Some options that are not permitted are a typewrite-like keypad, paper tape print out, sound, use of an electrical outlet, writing pads and pen-input devices.

For the Algebra I and Geometry classes, we recommend a scientific calculator. Look for a model that has these functions: fractions, exponents, positive and negative values, square root, powering (x^y or y^x), pi and reciprocal (1/x). This could be the Casio fx-65, Texas Instrument 30 or 36, or any comparable model by another manufacturer. The Algebra I Part A and Part B texts use the TI-30.

For Algebra II and above, we recommend a graphing calculator. One very good model is the Casio 9850GaPlus. However, the Texas Instrument models from 82 up to 89 are all very good choices. Generally, the higher the model’s number, the more advanced options the calculator will have.
