Some Descendants of Moses and Sarah (HOWLAND) ESTEY

of Nashwaak, New Brunswick, Canada

 First Generation

          1.  Moses1 ESTEY, son of Richard ESTEY and Ruth FISKE, was born in Rowley, Essex Co, MA 12 May 1755.  Moses died 29 May 1840 in New Brunswick.

He married Sarah HOWLAND in NB, CAN.  Sarah was born bef 9 Jun 1754 in North Yarmouth, ME.  Sarah was the daughter of Joseph HOWLAND and Elizabeth MITCHELL.  She was baptized 9 Jun 1754 in North Yarmouth, ME.

Moses sold his Upper Gagetown land on 26 Jun 1800 when they probably moved to St. Mary's parish, Nashwaak [John Hatt's Moses ESTEY writeup (#gE-h), p.140].  Moses’ sister Sarah ESTEY (of Waterborough, Queens Co Baptist church) was baptized 28 Sep 1801 and had moved to Nashwaak by 28 July 1804 [John Hatt's Moses ESTEY writeup (#gE-h), p.140.  This could be either Moses ESTEY's wife or his daughter.  It is unclear why Moses is not mentioned.]  Nashwaak, St Marys, Durham Bridge and Ludlow (est. 1814) could all be the same place?

The following indenture proves the marriage of Moses and Sarah  [This indenture was first brought to the attention of Thomas P. Doherty in Feb 1992 by John Hatt of of Fredericton NB in a draft of his “Ester Genealogy” and communicated 19 Mar 1992 with copy of the original to Elizabeth Pearson White who recorded included the information without credit in her "John Howland of the Mayflower", volume 2 (1993) p.248-53, a scholarly work.  See Elizabeth Pearson White "John Howland of the Mayflower", volume 2 (1993) p.248-53, for the ancestry of this Sarah Howland back to male Mayflower passenger John and Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland and John and Joan (Hurst) Tilley and other references for descendency from Isaac and Mary (Norris) Allerton and daughter Mary, wife of Thomas Cushman. See the Estey genealogy for the ancestry back to Mary (Towne) Estey who was hung as a witch in Salem MA 22 Sep 1692]:

The Children of Moses and Sarah (HOWLAND) ESTEY

[#E-wm is Moses Estey's will - daughter Sarah had already died]

What remains to prove is that a Sarah ESTEY married Abel POND having a daughter, Sarah Catherine POND, who married Miles MacMILLAN; and that she is the Sarah ESTEY who is the daughter of Moses and Elizabeth (HOWLAND) ESTEY.

I believe this to be true, but so far only have anecdotal evidence; for example...

In a note that Sarah ESTEY's granddaughter [Mary Alice (MacMILLAN) PHILLIPS] sent to my mother [Mary Alice (MacMILLAN) DOHERTY] in the 1920’s: *

she says that her grandmother was Sarah ESTEY, the daughter of Moses ESTEY and that a pink lustre cup (that I now have) once was given to Sarah ESTEY by her mother (who would be Sarah HOWLAND)

*the "MacKay reel" (NB Archives): Any information that would clearly establish that Sarah ESTEY was the daughter of Sarah HOWLAND and Moses ESTEY and that she married Abel POND is what is needed to confirm a link to the Mayflower.  Maybe there is some reference in documents of Sarah's siblings that would prove the relationship.  If this Estey connection is true, as I believe, then I have a good list of the children Sarah Estey and Abel POND and an extensive list of the children of Sarah Catherine POND and Alexander MacMillan.  I enclose some of this.

Movement of Moses Estey family: Burton (1783)-->Upper Gagetown (1788-1800)--> Nashwaak/St Marys/Durham Bridge/Ludlow (1800-1809+), Ludlow (1814-1840)

                            x. "I think too mother's father [Abel Pond] served in the war of 1812 was a Captain anyway & he was always called Captain Pond & treated with much respect.  He was an Universalist & behind his back strictly behind his back -p.3-  he was regarded with horror.  We youngones, I at least, used to sit looking at him with great curiosity wondering how a Universalist differed from Presbyterians. He used to pay us long visits (altho his own house was only a few miles away) & we youngones loved to have him, he was so entertaining."

"grandfather P. [Abel Pond] was "The Captain".  Can I speak to the Captain, never to your grandfather."

-p.2- "that pink lustre cup & saucer was once the property of my mother's mother" [Sarah Estey].  "I think that set was given to Sarah Estey by her mother" [Sarah Howland].

"Mother's mother [Sarah Estey] (she of the cup) died quite young & grandfather married again -p.4- a widow with 3 children & three more by this second marriage thus giving mother a lot of half brothers & sisters.  The step mother [Susanna Hovey McLeod Pond] was very cruel to mother & she married when she was barely out of her childhood & came to live with grandmother [Grace McLaggen MacMillan] who in her home was very unkind & domineering."

"p.5 back  This Howland was the Howland or a child of the Howland who came over in the first Mayflower.  The Estes are the aristocrats.  A family or two lived on the Nashwaak in my day blue eyed red headed very poor, very insolent and very insolent.  When we were walking (your Aunt Maud and I) through the Florence (Italy) galleries I saw this boy's face - the most striking picture of what seemed to be a nephew of mother's - your gr. gr. grandmother [Sarah Estey]. I looked it up and it was an Este.  In the meantime Maud had found another Este (Beatrice I think it was) & she raved around saying it was my exact likeness but I didn't notice it particularly.  I was "wrapped up" in cousin Johnny's portrait.  He lived with us when I was a child. Everybody lived with us.  The Estes of Italy are also blondes."

Notes written by Mary Alice MacMillan Phillips for Mary Alice MacMillan _1920s:

That lawyer cousin of your grandmother, Amy Jane, name's Will - Will Russell - I couldn't remember it when writing.  Also you had some shark(?) of a Loyalist ancestor on the Wright side. Imprisoned in some stone cell he loosened a stone but the aperture not being wide enough to let him wiggle out clothed, he stripped bare & naked & bleeding crawled away through the snow.  His name -- I am almost certain, was Stephen Wright.

After marriage (before the 1910 census) they moved to Minneapolis MN.  In _1911-15, they may have planned to move to Elizabeth NJ but when all furniture that had been shipped was destroyed in a train wreck, they didn't move. "This story could just be a dream, but it is a vivid one" (son Daniel MacMILLAN).  They attended Union church [Presbyterian/(Congrgational?) merger] in Hinsdale (Wilfred Rowell) before Clair died, but then attended Unitarian church with daughter (pasteur was Dr. Eugene Cosgrove).
