Dear Students, I hope you have a restful summer. I will miss you, but hope to see many of you around town or around the ball park. Please take a moment to view the awards earned by our graduates of 2012. I'm sure I will see your names on our sight next year, having earned similar accolades.
Congratulations to the entire eighth grade class! Our school science fair was held in March, 2012, and all projects were done carefully and expertly. All students received a First Place "superior", or a Second Place "excellent". We extend our thanks to the physics, chemistry, math students at IVCC who volunteered to judge our projects.
Congratulations to Hannah Huber, Maddy Pearson, and Abbie Senica, for excellent achievement in writing. HFS can only send three essays to the competition sponsored by the Oglesby Elks organization. The topic of the essay contest was "patriotism". This year, Hannah, Maddy, and Abbie wrote the top essays. We are proud of their superior writing skills.
Congratulations to Alex Bender, for being chosen as the Student Excellence Award winner from HFS. The Regional Office of Education, has asked our school to nominate an eighth grader who demonstrates community service, is an excellent image of social responsibility, and possesses a positive attitude and a good work ethic. Alex is our winner, and has been honored at a luncheon in Ottawa, where he received his commemorative plaque. These words were spoken about Alex: Alex Bender, whose parents are James and Rose Bender of Oglesby, is a young man in whom we take great pride. Alex holds himself to a strong academic standard. Alex is consistently on our honor roll, and works hard in school to have his work done well and on time. Alex was honored by our school as the November Student of the Month because he possesses the character traits of self-worth, responsibility, patriotism, respect, courage, honesty and kindness. Alex remains active by playing football in the city league, and basketball here at Holy Family School. We are proud of Alex’s dedication and service in our school and in our community. Alex has volunteered in our school library, and helped our local law enforcement agency create profiles of our students which protects their safety. Outside of our school, Alex volunteers in the community. He is helping to restore St Joseph Cemetery, a local cemetery, by painting and helping with maintenance. He regularly volunteers his time by serving as a guide during horseback rides provided for the local Girl Scouts and for students from the Lighted Way. Alex plans to attend St. Bede Academy after graduation
