Competency Goal 6

To maintain a commitment to professionalism

As an early childhood provider it is very important for me to maintain a commitment to professionalism. There are many ways in which I show my professionalism.

I truly enjoy working with young children in a group setting, and demonstrate a positive attitude in my role. I always come to work with a smile on my face and a bounce in my step. I wear nice clothes; however I make sure they are stain resistant. That way I can join in on messy activities without worries of ruining my outfits! I talk to children, and play with them every day. Children are the light of my life, and it sure shines brightly when they are around.

I continue to gain knowledge of physical, cognitive, language, emotional, and social development as a basis for planning program goals. I do this by collaborating with other professionals, seeking out early childhood information, and taking early childhood classes at Green River Community College. I own the NAEYC book called, Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs; and I read it often. That book has been an invaluable resource for me to learn about child development, and program planning.

I also take advantage of opportunities for professional and personal development by joining appropriate professional organizations, and attending meetings, training courses, and conferences. I attend a minimum of three early childhood conferences per year. For the past two years I have been attending the Math and Science, Art, Music and Literacy, and Diversity conferences which are hosted by the Green River Community College Early Childhood department.
