Time seems to be flying! We are already in September. I feel very blessed to have such a wonderful group of children again this year. The children seem to understand the Kindergarten routine already.
I would like to again remind you do keep all of the little books from reading in a special box or basket at your home and have your child read at least one book to you each night. This is very important as each little practice will help your child. You will then see the progress that your child is making throughout the year.
Important reading skills that we are emphasizing this month will be rhyming words, counting syllables in words, recognizing words in sentences, recognizing all of the capital and small letters of the alphabet and their sounds, recognizing classmate’s names, recognizing color words, looking for characters, setting in stories, understanding sequence of events in a story and identifying and isolating initial and final sounds in spoken words.
In handwriting, we will continue to practice our capital and lowercase letters. We will also begin printing our names on lined paper using a capital letter to begin our name and lowercase letters for the rest of our name.
In writing, we journal each morning. The children draw a picture from a daily topic. They then label their topic. We are modeling writing for them right now. As the year progresses, they will begin writing on their own. We do many shared writing activities also each week. I am sending home their weekly journal packet each week. If you save these, you will see your child’s growth as the year progresses.
In Math, we are beginning our new math core curriculum. The children are working and reviewing the numbers 1-5. We are counting items, drawing objects, writing the numerals and number words, and are being introduced to touch math, five frames, number lines, tally marks, inch cubes, and using our fingers to represent the numbers. We will soon begin working on counting to 100, and will also be counting by 10’s. We will be reciting the days of the week and months of the year.
In science, we will continue to learn about the five senses and scientific inquiry (exploration, observation, collecting, describing, comparing and recording).
In social studies, we will be learning about people’s characteristics, habits and living patterns.
In computer, we are learning to log on and off by ourselves. The children will be working on sites that are related to what we are learning.
In Religion, we are learning about Mass, proper behavior in Church, and praying the Rosary. We have also learned about Creation. It would be wonderful if you can take a little time to work with your child on praying the Rosary at home also. We welcome you to Mass also. When the weather is nice, we meet at church. Otherwise, we will be at school in the gym. It was nice to see some of your smiling faces last week. Your children loved seeing you there.
