| Some history about the Apartment Complex- Due to certain
promises I made to my secret agent friend, A.B.E., I can't give you too much
of the information we found. What I can say is that the place was flooded
out twice, once by Hurricane Floyd. Out of almost 140 apartments, there were
20-some people who insisted on staying around, until they were finally bought
out. The last of the residents moved out about 3 years ago. The place is
supposedly awaiting demolition. As far as we know, no one died during either
of the floods. A.B.E.'s Visits- Please note that the following comments are taken from e-mail conversations I've had with Mr. A.B.E. I haven't had the chance to visit the place myself, since it is posted. I found this place while driving home from work. The fence that surrounds the complex seems like an overnight installation, and I only noticed it a few weeks ago...which peeked my interest. After several more weeks of driving by and constantly scoping out the area, I finally got a chance to go explore the place one Saturday afternoon in the pouring rain. Getting past the fence wasn't too hard, since it stopped when it reached the creek. I simply walked around the fence and onto the parking lot. There are several large buildings, each are two floors high. The first floor apartments have separate basements. Each building has two halves, which means there are two main doors...each of which gives you acces to one-half of the whole building. The buildings are arranged so that there is a "courtyard" of sorts in the center. Located in the courtyard is a decent sized swimming pool, which is still filled with some pretty dirty-looking water. There is a small pool house right next to the pool, although it was empty. This was my first visit, and I only explored half of one building. As I mentioned in my last e-mail, it was pouring rain, so I was soaked as I moved from apartment to apartment. I found that all of the first floor apartments had most of the drywall cut away, showing just how high the flood water reached. I noticed a Wicker chair by a window on the second floor, but had a little trouble getting in. The easiest entrance to that part of the building turned out to be not so stable, as you'll see in the picture I attached. I had tried to move a board and enter through a kitchen, but found that the floor had caved into the basement. I'd been there for about an hour, I had to be somewhere, I was soaked to my skivies and I was getting pissed off that I was encountering too many locked doors (complete with padlocks). I headed home. (New E-mail) I made it back to the apartments. It was a nice, sunny Sunday mourning...it's so much nicer exploring places when it's NOT raining. Anyway, I got into the second half of that building. There were a few locked doors up on the second floor, but there was one that wasn't! Guess what...it was the one with the wicker chair! I actually stopped and called out "Hello" a few times. Why? Because it looked like people were still living there. The kitchen was very clean with dishes still in the cabnets. The wicker chair sat behind a nice wooden desk. There's a big, flat screen TV in the living room. (I've included pictures of both) The bedroom was furnished with a complete bedroom set. Dressers, end tables, bed and even sheets! There were books and magazines stacked in nice piles in all the rooms. As you can see in the pictures, there's even a fish tank with about three inches of water still in it! Although it was extremely cool finding a place like this, it was also a little creepy. I felt like someone was going to walk in any minute and ask me "What are you doing in my place?" No one did. After reading through some of the books and magazines (No Porn), I headed over to another building. The first half of that one was pretty much the same as the first. The first floor was wiped out and the second floor was locked up tight. I went back outside and looked for a way into the next half. Let this next part be a "heads-up" to other explorers out there. I found an unlocked back door to the second half (of the second Building). As I pushed, I found that there was a sink (yes, a kitchen sink) sitting on the floor up against the door. Well, that seemed a little odd, but I continued. I pushed the door open enough to pass through, but I made a lot of noise doing so. A few steps in and I heard something I really didn't expect...running water. This place has been empty for two friggin years! There's no power in the buildings I've been in so far, so I was surprised to hear water running from a faucet. A few more steps and I was at the front door of the apartment I came in...and I also heard the water turn off. At this point, I was faced with a choice...turn and get out before facing a person or persons that were obviously in the room ten feet away...or...I could take a peek and see who else is in here. On one hand, I would be playing it safe...but let's face it, I don't play it safe. Besides, it just might be another urban explorer who simply turned a faucet on and found it still working. Well, it wasn't. I decided to take a look. I took a few baby steps towards the door when I got to meet Mr. Bum. Without warning, this guy comes rushing out, hands reaching out towards me and yelling way too loud. He scared the s**t out of me and before I knew it, I had "Woody" (Woody is a 23 inch hardwood club that's my Little Friend) out and put a little Smack Down on his shoulder. It took him down, which gave me the opening to leave. And I did. The guy was dressed in ragged clothing, which was torn and worn all over. He had a beard that was rough and tattered. The guy was definately a squatter. I didn't stick around to explore anymore. (New E-mail) I went back to the apartments again, this time at night. Let me tell you, it's a lot creepier at night. And with the thought of Mr. Bum possibly wondering around, my heart was beating hard. I was ready...I had Woody, a night scope and a new toy...a 500,000 volt stunner. Now, I wasn't going back looking for trouble or to try out the new toy, I was simply there to look around. To be perfectly honest, I wanted to know how Mr. Bum got the water on! Not much happened this time around, except the deer the came REALLY close to making me piss my pants when it jumped out about 20 feet away. Those suckers are big! Anyway, I don't know if the big screen TV works. It doesn't have any noticable damage anywhere and everything else in the apartment looks to be a good order. It might work, I'll have to see if I can get some kind of portable power unit in there and try to fire it up. The door with the sink against it was locked up this time, and the sink was again propped up against the door. I decided against forcing my way in, since doing so would be extremely noisy and would give Mr. Bum plenty of time to figure out a way to get at me. Sorry, no pictures this time around. (New E-mail) I went on another night time excursion to "my" apartments. This time around I was on a mission...Operation: TeleReaction. The objective; to supply power to the big screen TV and see if it works. With a handy item called a power inverter, a battery pack and some cables...I was able to supply 110 voltage to the television. Unfortunately, the TV is dead. It didn't even attempt to kick on. I took a walk around the entire complex. Because it was so dark, the traffic going by had no chance of seeing me. I saw no sign of Mr. Bum and the doors to that building were still locked. I didn't stay long, like I said...I was on a mission this time around. I did what I came to do, so I left. I'll be going back at a later date, during the day, to explore some more buildings. I'll let you know how it goes. (New E-mail) I had a few hours to kill, so I ventured back to the Apartments. I made my way through the woods until I reached the first building. Still feeling the let-down from the Big TV being D.O.A., I decided to check the building where Mr. Bum was during my last visit. I found a door that could be "persuaded" to open and let myself in. I searched the entire building, but found no sign of Mr. Bum. (No clothing, dirty matresses or liquor bottles were found) I couldn't find any evidence of running water either. This really got me disappointed....I've become obsessed with finding out how he got the water on. I moved across the courtyard to another building I had not yet explored. Taking care to avoid being seen by certain storefronts, I entered throught the back doors of each apartment. I found that all of the 1st floor apartments were empty. And to get to the second floor, I had to wiggle through some wholes in the drywall. I guess I got through about 6 2nd floor apartments when I had my second "meeting" with Mr. Bum. The stairs went up about 3/4 of the way, then made a 90 degree left turn. I made the turn and was three steps away from the top when I caught movement on the landing on my left. I got my left arm up just in time to block a large tree branch that came crashing down on me. In my left hand was Zappy (my 500,000 volt stunner), in my right was Woody. Acting on instinct, I brought Woody up to speed, catching Mr. Bum again on the same shoulder. This stunned him enough for me to explain (yell) to him to QUIT IT! I got him to stop and listen to me. He told me he was afraid that I was going to steal his stuff! I explained to him that I was only exploring the place and had no intention of stealing his stuff. I only wanted to explore the place...nothing more. I agreed to stay out of "his" building, while he agreed to stop charging at me (since I beat the guy twice!). We spoke a little more and I made my way out. I'll be meeting up with a few other explorers soon. Hopefully we'll get a look at some of the other buildings I've yet to explore. Talk to you later. |
