Philadelphia State Hospital

A.K.A. Byberry Mental Institution

Philadelphia State Hospital is Condemned and contains asbestos and other hazardous materials. It is also Patrolled by Security 24/7, and is also routed by police regularly. The Explorers Club website, it's members and most especially its owner...does not condone, invite, welcome, encourage, dare, double-dog dare or even triple-dog dare anyone to trespass on the grounds or in the buildings at any time for any reason.

Posted- Hell YES. Federal stuff, too. Patrolled- Yes, there are two-man guard teams that patrol the grounds. Location- North East Philadelphia, Route 1 and Byberry Rd.
Danger Level- VERY High. Don't go, just look at the pretty pictures that are found on the internet. Dangers- "All of the above". Everything from asbestos and weak floors to cave-ins and the real chance of getting arrested.
Cool Factor- 10. Yeah, I know  the scale only goes to 5, but this place was just freaking cool.  Haunted- Possibly, but it is not possible to conduct a serious, controlled investigation on this site. Tunnels- Yes, although some are caved in or sealed up.
The History- To be honest, I could not do a better job then "Goddog". This guy is the ultimate Byberry explorer and historian. As far as urban Exploration goes, I take my Helmet-cam off to this guy.  To learn the history of Byberry and take a look at some old photographs, please visit his site at http://theduke81.tripod.com/

Our Visits- Well, it was TEC, Tactical, The Smoking Guy and The Smoking Girl that ventured out this day. We were a part of a special mission that actually took the full legal way to gain access to the property, although we weren't really supposed to go inside the buildings...who can resist? I mean...seriously! It's freakin' BYBERRY.

Our quest was to find the Morgue, as well as some of the other treasures left behind when the place closed in 1990. We decided to start our journey the true adventurous way...we jumped down into a tunnel before going into any of the buildings! From there, we made our way through several buildings, exploring the many rooms and poking around the piles of trash. To us, actual paperwork from the Hospital is like gold. And we found some. Patient records, requests for leave, nurse reports and even some evaluations were still inside the rooms.

We managed to find the Morgue (thanks to the directions sprayed on the walls!) and the small theatre. On a return visit, TEC got into the TB Building and found the X-ray machines and even some Doctor reports. Most of the place is empty of any really good stuff. We were also sad to see that too many people had been playing with fires in the buildings...using much of the old paperwork to fuel the flames. That's just not cool. Leave the paperwork alone, bring your own wood!

Although there isn't much to tell that sounds exciting, it was a great experience being able to explore such a large complex. Take a look at the photographs we brought back.
