One of the best war machines in the warhammer world is the goblin doom diver. It is more accurate than a stone thrower because the doom diver can redirect his dive as he suicidally plunges towards his enemy. Also, unlike other war machines, the doom diver has no maximum range. That means you may guess any distance that you want.
One of the most important
strategies when using a doom diver is to always pay attention
during your opponent's movement phase and remember your last doom
diver estimate. For example - say that on your previous turn you
had made a perfect estimate and landed the doom diver right in
the center of your opponent's regiment. It was exactly 20"
from your doom diver, but the shot got redirected completely.
Instead of screaming and pounding on the table, remember the
estimate you had made. Now your opponent is moving towards your
doom diver 8". Just subtract the 8" your opponent moved
from the 20". On your turn your turn, you will know right
away that the exact distance from the doom diver to the center of
the regiment is 12". You will be guaranteed to make a
perfect estimate. Now you must roll the artillery dice, and the
only strategy I know is crossing your fingers.
