If you are a seasoned Warhammer
player, then you will not learn much from this section. However,
if you are new to the hobby or are considering getting started,
then this section may help you to better understand the game as
well as some information about the different armies.
What is Warhammer?
Warhammer is a game designed to
be a realistic simulation of fantasy battles. It is played on
a table top with miniatures representing the troops of
opposing armies. Although not necessary to play the game,
painting the miniatures adds tremendously to the realism as
it brings out the details carefully sculpted into each
miniature. Another nice addition is to play with realistic
scenery such as hills, walls, woods, and buildings.
What are the different armies?
- Empire - An army
consisting of humans whose power lies in their advanced
technology. Empire engineers design new types of hand
guns and cannons. The strength of the empire army lies
not in the quality of the troops, but in the great
variety of different troop types.
- Orcs and Goblins - The
Orcs and goblins are a squabbling, unpredictable race.
They live for war and fighting. The army has two
different types of troops to choose from, either the
tough resilient orcs, or the numberous dim-witted
goblins. The Orcs and goblins can be a fun army to play
because they are always full of surprises.
- Realm of Chaos - The
realm of Chaos is really three separate armies who can
fight together. Because they are vastly different from
eachother, I will describe them separately. Although
members from one Chaos army can allie with another, you
still must choose one of the three to be the bulk of your
chaos force.
- Chaos Warriors
- Highly disciplined and well trained warriors.
They are completely encased in Chaos armor giving
them an above average armor saving throw. These
troops are unquestionably the most skilled
fighters in the Warhammer world. Their major
disadvantage is their high point cost.
- Beastmen -
These animal-like warriors are very resilient.
Boasting a massive two wounds, they take twice as
long to kill as other weaker troops. They are
also quite skilled fighters with an above average
toughness.
- Daemons -
Daemons are creatures made of pure magic. They
are a beautiful looking army because they can be
painted bright colors. There are four Daemonic
gods from which to choose your army: Khorne,
Nurgle, Slannesh, and Tzeench. Each has a
distinct fighting style and look.
- Vampire Counts - Led by
a Vampire, undead skeletons, ghouls, and zombies fight
with a mindless obedience to their master. They have no
mind and therefore are fearless, slowly marching into
battle to swarm over their enemy in great numbers.
- Tomb Kings of Khemri -
The tomb kings of khemri are a race of skeletons who are
led by ancient mummified kings. Their army has a distinct
look because they live in a vast desert.
- High Elves - The High
elves are a noble race of highly trained
citizen-warriors. They currently reside in Ulthuan, a
large island in the middle of the ocean. They were forced
to flee to this deserted home after the Dark elves split
off from their society and took over their former home.
- Dark Elves - The Dark
Elves are the cruel, twisted race who split off from the
High Elves and are constantly at war with eachother. They
delight in cruelty and war. Against the High Elves they
fight with the same hatred that forced them to split off
and form their own separate race.
- Wood Elves - The wood
elves were another group of elves who split off from the
high elves. They live within the forests of Loren which
are near the empire. Their expert woodsman skills are
accurately represented on the tabletop by allowing the
wood elves to move at full speed through the woods.
- Dogs of War - The dogs
of war are assorted mercenary regiments who can be hired
into any army. If you choose, they can also be their own
separate army led by a daring mercenary general.
- Skaven - These vile
ratmen live beneath the cities of the Empire. Wherever
they travel, plague and death are close behind.
- Dwarfs - The Dwarfs
reside in the mountains adjacent to the empire. Because
of their slow movement due to their small size, these
warriors are better adapted to defense rather than
attack.
- Lizardmen - This
ancient race was created by the Old Ones, the first
inhabitants of the Old World, to protect against Chaos.
Their Slan Mage preists are powerful mages and their
powerful minds are occupied with contemplating the
meaning of the universe.
- Bretonnians - The
Bretonnians live in the lands to the west of the empire.
They live by honor and virtue. Their knights are the best
in the Warhammer world.
- Chaos Dwarfs - These
mysterious Dwarfs live in the towers of Zharr Naggrund.
Here they plot to overthrow the west and dominate the
world.
