Hedges Diesel

A DIESEL ENGINE FACTORY FROM MARLTON'S PAST

"The NEW diesel power"

he factory was located on Route 73 at Baker Blvd, directly behind what is now Canals. Presently a Honda car dealership is being built there. Little is known, at least by me, when the factory was established, but is was in existence before 1955. The owners name was Harry Hedges who was characterized to me as an inventor by someone who met him.

The below photo shows an aerial view that was taken from a township publication in 1971. It shows the abandoned Hedges Diesel at the bottom right. In the top left is Mary's Luncheonette (Now Carolla's ). The houses are private residences, and Canals Liquor store now resides there.

The diesel factory consisted of two buildings. The large one with the dark roof was the work area. The connected white looking building was used as offices. Having visited the building many times, the offices are where I believe the ad photo from above was taken.

The roof of the building was flat with tarpaper covering it. Children of the development, including myself, would spend hours playing on the roof. On the far left side you can just barely see a garage door entrance. The doors were long gone before I started visiting the place. Inside the factory between the work area and the offices was a large heavy sliding door with a weight to help it slide. It took a considerable amount of effort to slide it to traverse between the two buildings. It probably was used to keep the sounds and smells from the offices.
