If you're ready, choose a tuning!

This web site is designed to aid fiddlers who want to use cross-key styles.. There are some great reasons to "mis-tune" your instrument. For one thing, it draws an unmistakable line between you, the largely self-taught, wiskey-drinkin', wild gal dating, ramblin', gamblin', good-time-havin' larger-than-life fiddler. and the parsimonious, tight-sphinctored, scared-to-death-to-play-a-wrong-note, "that's not the way my master taught me", in bed by ten violiner! For another, a mediocre fiddler can sound fabulous when using them properly!

To use this site properly, you're going to need to have a MIDI plug-in likeQuicktime installed. (Or an alternative such as Yamaha's MIDI player) It's not a very hard trick, and I have faith that you'll be able to do it. So if you don't have one, or if you get an error message that says "invalid sound file" or something,CLICK HERE. Don't worry about me, I'll wait.

About MIDI files and fiddling

MIDI files can never get that fiddle style, any more than sheet music can. These files can only give you the major thrust of a tune, not the style that they're played in. That's up to you. MIDI files sound mechanical, robotic compaired to a live fiddler, and they never really catch the nuances. I intend to bolster these files with secondary files at half speed, and both Quicktime and Yamaha's plug-ins allow you to download the file to use in your own MIDI software.... Your welcome. - E. Z.
