Old California recorded on wax cylinders in the field by Charles Lumis at the begining of the twenteth century. It took a lot of persuading to get the Southwest Museum in South Pasadena to release them. We have the late Bob Thomas (Piper extrodinare/Wastrel) and Ernie Fishbach (Strings/Toss pot) to thank for finding them, back in the 70's and spreading the word. It was Lee Birch (Fiddler/Toro en la porcilinaria) who wrote the sucessful grant to get copies from the museum. He, Luis Goena (Tecolero/Goat-herder) and David Kilpatrick PHD. (an Applied-Ethnomusicologist, but we're forgiving misdemeanors today.) convinced the museum to release the tapes to us last year. Whereas these recordings were made a long time ago, and weren't well cared for, you shouldn't expect high fidelity. I've done my best to bring them back with EQ and noise filters. However,"MUSIC" doesn't require high fidelity, only "quality sound" does. Personally, I have gotten a lot of musical information out of listening to scratchy ol' 78 RPM records found at the Goodwill. (But then, I'm a musician, not an audiophile) You'll need the RealAudio or RealPlayer plug-in/software. The part you need is free. | ||
