29. Dr. James Robert Adair (Thomas , Alexander , Jean , Robert , William , Ninian , William , Ninian , Alexander , William , Niegello , Robert FitzGerald de ) was born in 1709 in Antrim, Ireland. He died in 1795 in Robeson, Nc.
REF; ADAIR HISTORY AND GENEALOGY BY JAMES BARNETT ADAIR
James came to the Colonies around 1730. He served in the RevolutionaryWar and is listed on a marble tablet placed by the DAR on the frontinside wall of Duncan's Creek Presbyterian Church.
James ADAIR asked Governor GLEN for a trade monopoly with the Choctaw & later the Chickasaw. John VANN of the Ninety Six community was hired to transport ammo to the Choctaw, Chickasaw & Creek. After the hunt they immediately fitted themselves for war against the Creek. There came a gang from the Overhills let by the Little Carpenter and Torsetty of Settico. Dr. Thomas WALKER was sent by the Loyal Land Company of Virginia into Tennessee. He went to the present Kingsport. He noted bison trails. Walker went into Kentucky thru the Cumberland Gap, which he named after the Duke of Cumberland.
The traders were the first to penetrate Indian Country. They were white men living on the edge of civilization, or in some cases, living among the Indians, and very often taking an Indian wife. Some became almost Indian but only a few left records. One who left much was James Adair, the “English Chickasaw” who wrote Adair’s History of the American Indians.” London 1775.
James is called the "Father" of the Oklahoma branch of Adairs who were Indian Traders. He wrote the authoritative HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN INDIANS, published in London in 1775. He has been called by various writers an Englishman, a Scotchman and an Irishman-and with some basis of fact in each case. He derived from the historic Irish house of Fitzgerald. Indeed, Fitzgerald was his true name. That family descends from Walter, son of Other, who at the time of the Domesday Survey (1086) was castellan of Windsor and tenant-in-chief of five of the counties of England. His descendants took active parts in the conquest of Ireland, where one of them in 1346 came into the Earldom of Kildare. Another line of the Fitzgeralds was that of the Earls of Desmond, which also descended from Maurice, the founder of the family in Ireland. The Desmond branch, under the third Earl, who was viceroy of Ireland in 1367-69, became embroiled in difficulties and suffered defeat, and was captured by a native king of Thomond. From ADAIRS OF KINHILT - James had two sons, John and Edward. The children of Edward and some of the children of John became the parents of the Adairs of the Cherokee Nation (according to the HISTORY OF THE CHEROKEES by Emmett Starr). Will Rogers was a descendant of this branch.
In 1769 James Adair purchased land on east side of Mitchells Swamp,James Adair (dc.1783) conveyed it to Archibald McKissock (his executor & trustee ?)in trust for Adair's grandson, Stephen Adair Cade (b.1764 Bladen Co NC).
