Special
thanks to Bill Bell for sharing the following information about
Cipro:
(please contact him directly if you have any other questions about
this drug)
"I thought you might want to pass this along.....in
light of recent events
I thought you would like to hear my comments concering the bacillus
anthracis (anthrax) and cipro.....fortunately cipro is lactose free
however, its not recommended in people less than 18 years of age. When
reading the literature, it does indicate that children may use cipro
for
inhalation anthrax. I would advise parents not to panic but yet consult
their physician if this scenerio should arise. There is a liquid form
of
cipro available, but usually not stocked in pharmacies due to adults
taking the tablet form. I have been asked many questions on this subject
in the last few weeks. I just wanted to mention to you to pass along
that
cipro is lactose free and thus able to be used in the galactosemic
patient. Another rx, doxycycline, does contain lactose. This drug is
safe
to use in children 8 years of age and older due to its effect on early
childhood teeth development. As I mentioned in my talk in Atlanta,
the
short term goal of this drug may out way the lactose that it contains.
In
other words it is more important to eradicate the bacteria than to
worry
about the amount of lactose that it has. If you have any other questions
or concerns please feel free to email me.Take care".........Bill
