Menu Ideas
While there are differences in diet restrictions, below is just an idea of what some galactosemic children may eat. Keep in mind that your own doctor/clinic may not necessarily approve of all these foods so you should check with your clinic first to be sure a certain food is "allowed" for your child. And always be sure to read food labels carefully, as companies do change food product ingredients often.

Some breakfast food ideas
Kellogg's Pop-Tarts.... most, not
all, are dairy-free
toast (made with
dairy-free margarine and dairy-free bread)
Bagels (most are
dairy-free)
Pancakes (made with
rice dream or soy formula instead of milk)
Milk-free cereals (such
as Cheerios)
Homemade waffles
(without milk)
Eggs
Oatmeal
hash browns,
bacon or sausage w/ salsa (Thank you, Evelyn Rice)
Van's Toaster Waffles - Cinnamon
Apple (Dairy-free)
Some Lunch food ideas
Peanut butter and jelly sandwich (be
sure jelly is made with acceptable fruit if you are excluding some fruits)
Pasta (most pastas are
dairy-free) (toss with oil or dairy-free margarine)
Turkey, ham, pastrami
etc. (or other approved lunchmeat) sandwich
(check
ingredients for packaged lunch meats or ask at your Local deli - be sure
that your deli uses a different slicer to slice
meat than they use to slice cheese)
Tuna sandwich (check
tuna label carefully)
Pretzels
fruit cups (with allowed
fruit)
Egg salad
mayonnaise is usually
dairy-free
mustard is usually
dairy-free
Hamburgers (be sure
that the bun is a dairy-free bun)
Hot dogs (check label,
some are OK, especially the beef hot dogs)
Soup
chicken salad sandwich
Some Dinner Ideas
Milk-free chicken nuggets
pasta with lactose-free margarine or oil
homemade meatloaf (made with milk-free breadcrumbs)
Hamburgers
most vegetables are ok (note: many parents exclude some legumes, such as beans)
Cheese-free pizza, if you allow tomatoes
potatoes (baked, boiled, mashed - without milk, can use Rich's non-dairy creamer)
Most forms of meat are OK - chicken, steak, pork chops - cook without dairy!
spaghetti and meatballs (if you allow tomato sauce)
pot roast (w/ potatoes, carrots, onions, make sure gravy is ok)
beef stew

Little Pizzas on English Muffins or Toast - Muffin w/ sauce and

Macaroni noodles with safe margarine and garlic
A lot of rice mixes are okay especially the
"off-brands" of Chicken or beef flavors
turkey bacon
homemade fries
Taco salad and tacos ...both hard
and soft shells. Watch the taco
seasoning...some has lactose in it.
"scallop" ham and
potatoes...I just cook diced potatoes, drain and add chunks of diced ham. Mix
in a generous amount of safe margarine, S&P. It is good.
I make a modified macaroni salad made with crushed
pineapple, ham, celery, carrots, onion, another optional item is peas which I
sometimes use in moderation IF you allow them. I pour a mixture of mayo,
mustard with a little sugar over the macaroni and veg.
Several brands of Ramien noodles.
Schwan's carries a Mexican food called Taquitos.
I just found them at a local Aldi's store that has
both chicken and beef flavors. They can be fixed in the microwave,oven or fryer...couldn't be easier.
Chicken breast with seasoning of your choice cooked in
a George Foremen type grill is fast and good.
Chef
salads with safe ingredients...with a safe salad dressing.
