On the East Coast, "hurricane season" is the best time to surf because the waves get their biggest (up to double overhead, or 12-foot faces), and the water is at its warmest (up to 70 degrees F in September).

Here are a few satellite shots of recent hurricanes from NASA, in reverse chronological order. Obviously, 2005 was a very active year, and I included a couple of shots from the horrendous flooding that took place after Katrina's heavy rainfall -- more than 15 inches in some places -- caused the levees along the canals to fail.
