This was the early incarnation of the 20th Anniversary Byrds Tribute that Gene assembled in '85. Gene toured with varying configurations of this band (including Byrds drummer Michael Clarke for awhile) at least into 1986. After Gene left, Michael Clarke toured for a while with Byrds-alumni Gene Parsons using the "Michael Clarke's Byrds" moniker. All of this created bad blood with the other former Byrds - McGuinn, Hillman and Crosby - who banded together long enough to record a few songs that appeared on the original Byrds box set and enabled them to regain control of the Byrds name. The original five Byrds put aside their differences long enough to play together one more time at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Within months both Gene Clark and Michael Clarke had passed away from the effects of long time alcoholism.

The remaining members of The Band had begun touring again around the same time (without Robbie Robertson) until Richard Manuel committed suicide. It was around this time that Danko began sitting in with Gene Clark.

Check here for some great photos by Bill Allen though the flash animation to access galleries and photos is tiresome.
