Patty Griffin - Love From My Lips Vol. 1

"The opening six songs of this CD are from Patty's very first official release - a cassette that was sold at her early gigs in and around Boston, MA. The tracks were recorded in 1991 at a small studio in a barn behind the house she lived in with her then-husband in Arlington, MA. When Patty began cutting tracks with producer Nile Rogers in early 1992, the tape was made unavailable."

1. I Write The Book

2. The Longer You Wait

3. You Don't Have Me

4. Under These Clouds

"The first few lines of 'Under These Clouds' refer to Patty's frustration with her job, at the time of the song's writing, as a waitress at the Harvard Square (Cambridge, MA) Pizzeria Uno restaurant."

5. Let Your Freedom Ring

6. Off You Go

"This song was written in the spring of 1991."

7. Never Gonna Be

"One of the earliest-written songs on this collection, although not the earliest recording. This is from an October, 1994, Cambridge, MA, club gig. This track features second guitar by John Curtis, Patty's guitar teacher at the time and former member of the Pousette-Dart Band."

8. We Are Water

"Written about a friend of Patty's who was preparing to move from the Boston area. Patty would later say, 'The song must have worked... he stayed.'"

9. Cat's Out of the Bag

"Written around 1981, this was a mainstay, and fan favorite of her club shows in the early 1990's."

10. No More Pioneers

"At the time of this club recording, Patty was traveling from Boston to New York City on a regular basis to work with Nile Rogers. At her gigs, Patty would often mention her awe of the session singers doing their backing parts for this song. This track features second guitar by John Curtis."

11. All The Rain

"A favorite of Patty's, this song was also tracked during the never-released Nile Rogers sessions. This cut is from Patty's performance at the Concord (MA) Inn on September 25, 1992."

12. When Something's Broken

13. I Wonder

"Written in 1994, this recording is from a show at Passim's in Cambridge, MA, in June of that year."

14. Shells

"Written in 1994 about the situation in Bosnia. This live cut was recorded in May, 1997."

15. White Dove

"A song Patty wrote in October, 1994, which was soon covered by the award-winning bluegrass band Southern Rail. This track features second guitar by John Curtis."

16. Time of the Dance

"Patty wrote this 'about being married and living in a cold winter.'"

17. Connie & Val

"Written about, or at least inspired by, experiences Patty had during her time spent working as a telephone operator for Harvard University."

18. Pushing Thirty

"This is from an October, 1994, Cambridge, MA, club gig and features second guitar by John Curtis."

19. Breaking Skin

20. Bubba's Sulky Lounge

"Inspired by the name of a bar in Patty's then hometown of Portland, Maine."
