THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND
The Gatlinburg Tapes 1971 [no label, 1CD, Pink Robert Remaster]

Home jam recorded at Duane’s home in April 1971; studio sessions recorded at Gatlinburg Studios, TN, April 1, 1971. (Some state this as early 1971 rehearsals.) Very good audio.

If you had walked by and this recording is on, you might have thought that you were listening to Robert Johnson! Those (Mississippi?) blues, the steel (slide) guitar and that raw sound. When he was alive, Duane Allman was seen as a guitarist extraordinaire. But he also worked at his craft. While this recording has been around for some time, it still offers a rare glimpse of the guitarist at work - here Duane is in a relaxed mood in probably a practice or jam session, with Dickey Betts present.

Meanwhile, zubbid, in a note at pinkrobert.net, said: “Listen for the covers of Tim Buckley’s Once I Was and Morning Glory” on Tracks 4 and 5. It’s not so much a full-blown cover, rather snatches here and there and it does show what Duane picked up musically.

Dickey Betts wrote Blue Sky for his then Native American girlfriend, Sandy “Bluesky” Wabegijig (they married in 1973 and divorced two years later) and many fans feel that this is among one of the best Allman Brothers songs. Here are four takes to warm your heart.

Outside of the musical and film, The Sound Of Music, My Favourite Things is closely associated with jazz great John Coltrane. Ever the adventurer, Duane tries to see what else he can do with the song with guitars and keyboards. Between Blue Sky and My Favourite Things, it all adds up to a great flight of fancy. Duane died in a motorcycle accident in October 1971 and while the Allman Brothers Band never got the chance to record My Favourite Things with Duane, the song continues to be part of the band’s live repertoire.

Thanks to Pink Robert for sharing the tracks and for remastering them.
