Why are the Visitors here? In recent articles, we have speculated on a possible purpose behind their presence in the human realm. Many researchers say that they seem to be moving toward an objective. Yet there are many theories as to just what that objective may be.
David Jacobs, in his article, "Thinking Clearly about UFO Abduction,"[i] claims that, steadily and systematically, UFO abduction is increasing in scope. While this may or may not be true, descriptions from some experiencers, and the results of Jacobs' work, combine to suggest that, in some way, the Visitors may be shifting their operations. Regardless of what this shift may be, some type of trend in the Human-Visitor relationship seems to be present. This implies that in the future this relationship will somehow be different from today. Thus, we need to ask, "What does the future hold?"

Emergence and Awakening
Most visionaries tell us that we are at a crossroads in world history. While details may vary, the overall message is clear: Change is required. We need to modify the current course of history or face large-scale negative consequences. Some even say that to do this requires a new way of thinking, a new level of enlightenment, the raising of human consciousness.
In nearly the same thought as the above statement, we begin to note apparent shifts of awareness occurring among experiencers. As we noted earlier, the close encounter phenomenon appears to be one of many possible catalysts for this and related changes. I have observed that in many long-term close encounter cases, the Awakening phenomenon seems to be present at its fullest, with experiencers developing sometimes-powerful parapsychological gifts: healing, precognition and prophecy, clairvoyance, telepathy, etc. Along with this growth in abilities comes a growth in awareness. They seem to gain deep metaphysical insights. In the end, I wonder if such a deep shift of perspective might be one key purpose behind the Visitors' interaction with humanity.
Many experiencer families have also indicated that their children appear to be psychically "awakened" at a very early age. In many such cases, these children seem to be examples of "Indigo" children: brilliant, precocious, psychic, and philosophically advanced. In an earlier article, we examined what I called the "Indigo Hypothesis." This is the proposition that "They" are breeding/nurturing a new version of "us" - in some way more compatible with the cosmic community.. It is not clear whether such "Indigo" characteristics arise through learning or physical inheritance. However, in either case, we can imagine these children as the vanguard of a new, awakening humanity.
Others have pointed out that both the Indigo Children and adult Awakening seem to be far more general than the population of UFO-encounter experiencers. Is this simply because of limitations in our knowledge of these phenomena or it is true that close encounter experiencers are but a subset of those experiencing these gifts?
What then, is the actual relationship? While this is still very much of a mystery, it appears that there is a close yet strangely ambiguous link present between Awakening and Close Encounters. We pointed out in an earlier article that the UFO/CE4 phenomenon and the Awakening phenomenon seem to occur in a cycle of positive feedback, in which each enhances the other.
A
Bridge between Worlds
In one sense, the CE4 phenomenon appears to be a conjoining of two worlds: that of everyday experience and that of the Visitors. Raymond Fowler's book, "The Synchrofile"[ii], describes numerous experiences of metaphysical, synchronistic and close encounter events, all intimately intertwined. He speculates on their relationship and its implications. One conclusion is that there seems to be two separate worlds in the life of an experiencer: the everyday world and the world of the phenomenon.
David Jacobs, in his book, "Secret Life,"[iii] also elegantly presents this theme. He describes how the abductee seems to lead a double existence, with life as part of the phenomenal realm being a closely guarded secret. This can form a degree of isolation, separating the experiencer from the everyday world. It makes the close encounter experience one of the biggest hurdles in life that I can imagine.
Many experiencers with whom I have worked have described to me this same sense of having two separate lives, mundane and phenomenal. The phenomenal world seems to be a world in which they are heavily involved, yet of which they have little overt awareness. However, this hidden world secretly seems to dominate the experiencer's life.

We have examined hypotheses of how the Visitors seem to be interacting with humanity. We can conclude by asking whether it may be a goal of the Visitors to foster just such a bridging between realms. Is the Awakening phenomenon, which we described earlier, actually a building of this bridge within the life of the experiencer? In the end, we can ask whether it is the goal of the Visitors to see humanity grow and bridge the gap between realms, both as a race, and within each individual - a cosmic bridge between realms.
The
Cosmic Imperative
In previous articles, we speculated on the motivations for the Visitors' interactions with humanity. Yet one thing bears review, and that is the situation and potential changes in the human realm. A brief look at human history immediately suggests why the Visitors may be paying so much attention to humanity in the present day. We earlier established some key points of urgency regarding the current state of humanity:
1. At the present time, the aggregate human psyche is probably not prepared for extraterrestrial contact. We noted the possibility of significant damage to human culture from premature overt contact and suggested that any enlightened E.T. civilization would choose to avoid this.
2. In the present day, humanity's largest single endeavor is war. Thus, for any visiting ET civilization, contact with humans would probably be a risky business. Furthermore, such warlike behavior makes us, at best, unpleasant neighbors to the cosmos.
3. For the first time in the history of our civilization, humanity has developed the capability for destruction on a planetary scale. Thus, we may have reached a point where we pose a danger to the Cosmic Community.
4. Space exploration is becoming a major endeavor of the economically developed nations. We are planning longer-term space expeditions - to the Moon and Mars, as well as robotic ventures to the outer planets. In addition, a quick look at the leading edge of physics suggests that we may be closer than we think to the advent of star travel. Perhaps within the few centuries, such journeys may become reality.
A quick perusal of current events shows the above points as key characteristics of our present era. For the Visitors, it might also suggest the urgency of their endeavor. Is our civilization developing into a threat to the cosmic community? The scenario of a warlike humanity spilling out into the cosmos might be a very real possibility. Could this be the prime reason for the Visitors' apparent interest in our world? I suggest that, to any cosmic-scale civilization, the state of human civilization MUST be a matter for concern.
Yet, while we may well be dangerous to those in the cosmic neighborhood, perhaps we can also be an invaluable asset to the universe. Will we carry our warlike ways into the heavens? Or will we learn to live in a more harmonious, constructive way? I often wonder if those of the cosmic community, whoever they may be, feel a responsibility help us to do the latter.
Good, Evil and Human
Intent
Are the Visitors good or evil? I have come to ask, "Good or evil for whom?" The answer I find is that our interactions with them seem to transcend that simple question. There are many theories on why the Visitors are here, but in the end we don't know their ultimate agenda. I even wonder if the Visitors who are behind the phenomenon somehow transcend the question of human intent.
The Visitors are who they are, and they are not us. Yet, in many ways, as sentient beings they may be one with us. They seem to be here to study us and to teach us, as well as for other unknown reasons. Perhaps all of this is in the hope that one day we will join them as positive, contributing citizens of the Cosmos.
From working with experiencers and simply studying the close encounter literature, I have begun to suspect that, for better or for worse, humanity and the Visitors are on a converging course. Very slowly, human and E.T. consciousness are coming together. This now seems to be happening at the level of the individual experiencer, separately and covertly, yet on a massive scale. Yet with each experiencer becoming more aware, it may be that there is a building critical mass, the "conscious evolution" taking place. A bridge may be in the process of formation - human convergence with the Visitors and the reality of the close encounter.
Returning
Home on the Cosmic Path
The above suggests that, both for the Visitors and for humanity, a time of reckoning has come. We can picture a cosmic community faced with a potential human out-flux from Earth, a potential danger to the presumed community of worlds. Thus, in our speculations, we find ourselves traveling a cosmic path that eventually returns us back to Earth.
We have reached what I often think of as a cosmic crossroads and must choose which path to follow. Will we take the path that leads to a healthy future world in relationship with the cosmos? If so, what is required? Many visionaries tell us that we need a fundamental change in the way in which we conduct the daily business of life. The old ways of war, environmental degradation, and a self-oriented lifestyle no longer suffice. This implies that the service-to-self concepts on which our society is based no longer suffice as a foundation for our world. If we believe what many experiencers are saying, then perhaps the Visitors are trying to teach us, in their own mysterious way, such a higher concept.
What is this higher concept? What is the change we need to make? This is a topic for other columns, other newsletters, and perhaps for other authors. I make no claims to be an expert on spiritual enlightenment, environmentalism, or international relations. There already is much literature on spiritual advancement, care of Earth, etc. However, those who have interacted with the Visitors say that it is time to learn these concepts as a species. It is time to raise our consciousness, to adopt new ways, and to do so promptly.
Experiencers frequently describe scenarios literally "beamed" into their minds, of natural disaster, war, environmental collapse and other catastrophes. The message of this seems clear even if the details are often ambiguous or contradictory. We are in imminent danger of destroying ourselves. Nearly every experiencer have told me this, and most accept it as nearly an absolute truth. Thus, I suspect that this is a key message of the Visitors to humanity - a warning: "clean up your act or else..." As we have seen, the stakes are high.
This warning, and this apparent attempt to educate humanity, both suggest that the Visitors are not the dispassionate scientists of "The Prime Directive." Rather, they are concerned for our welfare, at least to some degree and for reasons known only to them. Perhaps humans have something important to offer the cosmos. Perhaps our destruction would rob them of the vital resource that is us. Or perhaps they are simply concerned, as described earlier, about a less-conscious humanity spilling out into the cosmos. In either case, we have suggested that there may be a vested interest for the Visitors in human survival and the growth of human consciousness.
So far, in this series, we have proposed that, for better or for worse, it is a destiny of humanity to be in an ever-deepening relationship with the Visitors. I suggest that the more conscious we become the closer and more positive will be this relationship. Thus, I propose that it is a key goal of the Visitors to help humanity avoid the abyss, to reach out to the stars as neighbors capable of joining whatever cosmic civilization is already present. In the end, perhaps the Visitors' main purpose for being on Earth is to help humanity slowly and steadily forge this cosmic bridge to the other side of the sky.
