The Werebear
A single warrior leaves the safety of town. Tall and lanky, the warrior strides confidently through the wilderness, unimpressed by the dangers of this country. The demons lurking behind the bush smell an easy kill; this single warrior can never defeat their entire troop! They watch him approach, anticipating an easy victory. Just as they jump out of the bushes, the fallen are shocked, the one seemingly weak man is changing! His arms bulge outward revealing muscles heretofore unseen! The warrior's shoulders broaden, now spanning twice the wingspan of the demons. His body becomes covered in a thick brown fur. Yet the eyes still retain the intelligence and cunning of the warrior as he surveys the field as HE expects an easy kill. The previously confident fallen flee in terror as none can escape the awesome power of a Werebear...

Such is the mythology of a Werebear, as it pertains to the world of Diablo. A seemingly weak individual who, at a moment's notice, can change his shape, becoming a fearsome warrior. The mechanics of the game back up this assumption, as the Werebear is extremely powerful. When developed properly, a Werebear can wield melee strikes of unmatched strength while employing a powerful defense, wielding a huge life pool and being able to control crowds of monsters by stopping them in their tracks.

The melee power of a Werebear comes from the combination of many sources of damage amplification. A high level of strength coupled with the Werebear skill, the Heart of the Wolverine spirit, and the Maul attack adds up to an overwhelmingly damaging strike. With such a huge increased percent of damage, the only thing that a Werebear needs to worry about for damage is its attack speed.

The defensive power of a Werebear is not as diversified, but it is still potent. The Werebear skill gives a great boon to the character's defense when in its wereform, allowing it to tank large groups of monsters with ease.

The life of a Werebear can be increased via the use of three skills. First, the Werebear skill gives a Werebear +50% life. Next, Lycanthropy grants additional life that increases with the number of skill points invested. Finally, the Oak Sage spirit grants a large increase in life while in use.

Despite all of these points, my personal favorite part of the Werebear is its crowd controlling ability. Animals summoned from the Summoning skill tree draw off monster attacks, giving the Werebear breathing room, even in large battles. However, the biggest crowd control skill that the Werebear possesses is the Shockwave skill which can render affected monsters inactive for long periods of time. For more on this, continue to the skills section.
