Frog Pond

My first water lily 5/17/03

Summer 2003
Rather than replace these departed friends, I decided to build a small pond outside my kitchen window in hopes of attracting frogs in their natural environment. I am happy to say that a family of three frogs took up residence in the pond two years ago. It's great fun watching them!

Summer 2004
As time passes, so do some of our friends. I only have one frog living in my pond now, but he seems pretty tough, even outlasting the recent accidental draining of the pond. With the pond now full to the brim, he basks happily in the sun.

May 2004 Summertime and the living is easy...

Say, what is it about loud sounds that seem to stimulate the vocal renderings of frogs? They delighted us with their own rendition of some popular music one evening. They seem to appreciate the contrasting sounds of "The Blues Brothers" and "Gladiator". Oddly enough their taste seems to run to the classical as well. Has anyone out there witnessed this phenomenon?

July 2005

Last winter I lost my last froggy friend you see pictured lower left. I think he left because my pond had become too rootbound with plants, leaving little room to wiggle. Since then I cleaned out the pond, leaving nothing but my water lily. I have been watching every day, hoping for another hopper to move in.

I am happy to announce that today, 7/7/05, I saw my newest froggy friend visiting the pond. He was sitting on the pond edge and is no bigger than my thumb. You can see him if you look closely, next to the red heart...

August 4, 2005
It has been about a month since I spotted my new froggy friend enjoying my little outdoor pond. Much to my surprise, two days ago I was delighted to see not one but two little frogs sitting on the edge of the pond. They are about the same size, but still very small. It is difficult to get a picture of them together, but I was fortunate to get one close up.
