Bob was born June
29, 1947 in Portsmouth, NH. He is the only child of Frank and Elizabeth Hersey. Bob
attended Portsmouth schools. He was a boy scout, played little league, big league
and JV baseball. Bob graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1965.
Bob's family owned one of the largest bakeries
in the area and he learned the baking craft at an early age. Besides working for the
family bakery he worked as a pastry chef at the famed Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, Maine.
After high school, Bob enlisted in the Army and was sent to Germany. After a short
time he volunteered for assignment to Vietnam where he served two voluntary tours of duty.
One with K Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment
and the other with the 528th QM Company.
Bob returned home in 1969 and took up his former profession as a baker in Portsmouth's
only remaining bakery - Sher's home bakery. It was there that Bob met Hellen Small
of Eliot, Maine. They married October 2, 1971.
Bob, Hellen and Hellen's son, Rick moved into an apartment next door to Bob's parents.
Hellen and Bob still live there today. Their son, Rick lives in Bedford, NH
with his wife Liz (Osario) and their three children, Drew, Dana and Lacey. Rick owns and
operates Threshold Building.
In 1973 the bakery where Bob and Hellen worked, closed. Bob went to work as an
airfield firefighter at Pease AFB - a SAC base. Bob was a member of The Nat'l Assoc.
Of Govt. Employees (a labor union) and served as the local's Vice President. He was
also a volunteer firefighter for the city of Portsmouth.
In 1976 Bob began attending St. Catherine Of Siena
Church in Portsmouth and two years later he joined the church.
Bob began attending classes at New Hampshire Technical College and in 1981 earned a degree
in science.
He
is now retired from the Fire Service and thoroughly enjoys retirement life.
Bob likes reading, films and sports. He is an avid New England Patriots fan.
Good thing. They won the Super Bowl in 1985, 1996, 2001, 2003 and
2004. |
Hellen was born in
Portsmouth, NH on August 27,1942. Her parents, Percy and Madonna Small lived at 94
Pleasant St. in Eliot Maine.
The house was a huge 17 room Victorian style home. There, Hellen grew up with her
older sister, Donna and her two younger brothers, Robert and Richard. There was a
huge garden next to the house and Hellen, along with the others would tend the garden -
harvesting the finest strawberries in Eliot and selling them for $.45 a quart.
Hellen attended Eliot schools. She was active in school as a member of the band,
glee club and art club. She graduated from Eliot High School in 1960.
Following high school, she attended The Golden School Of Beauty Culture in Portland, Maine
and graduated in 1961.
Following graduation from beauty college she began work in a local beauty salon. In
1970, Hellen began work at Sher's Home Bakery in Portsmouth where she met her future
husband, Bob. They married in 1971.
During the 1970s Hellen was actively involved in Scouting. She was a den mother for
their son Rick's cub scout den. She was also active in school affairs. She
chaperoned field trips, organized school suppers and volunteer for the neighborhood
community association.
Hellen is a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church
and is a formed Minister Of Communion. She is a member of St. Catherine Woman's
Club and serves on several church committees. She volunteers her time to the home
bound and works each month at the local "soup kitchen" as the team leader for
her core group.
Hellen owns and operates her own business providing hair care services to the home bound
and she works at the Mark Wentworth Nursing Home in Portsmouth.
Hellen's hobbies are arts and crafts, gardening, yard-sailing, snorkeling and reading.
She has traveled extensively. Her favorite vacation pastime is cruising
aboard some of the world's newest and largest cruise ships.
