1. Basics

Every job has available to them various combat and magic skills with different caps on each available skill.
If a skill is not normally available to that job, it's cap is implied to be zero.
When the cap has been reached for that job at that level, the skill level indicator turns blue for that value.

Some jobs have greater proficiency with a specific skill than others and thus can reach a much greater level before hitting it's cap.
Generally, increases in skill give the user increased accuracy and potentcy in the associated abilities.

The value that a skill caps at is called it's Rank. From levels 1 to 60 there are five ranks; A through F.
Beyond 60 the Ranks split farther into + and - subdivisions.

For melee and ranged weapons, reaching specific milestones grants the useage of new weaponskills.
While all classes that can attain that prerequisite level can learn it, not all jobs will actually be able to use it.
Each job is flagged with hidden values that determine what weaponskills are available to them (assuming they are at or above the required skill level.)

Equipping certain items or applying merit points will allow the player to use weaponskills otherwise not available to them at that time. The only exception is that for quested weaponskills they must be at or beyond the associated level without the aid of equipment or merits.

For example: Red Lotus Blade is an EX Sword weaponskill. While a Red Mage would be able to learn it, it would not be able to actually use it unless their subjob is either WAR, PLD, DRK or BLU.

Another example: While Bards can reach the required level to use Savage Blade, they are not able to use it under any circumstance because they cannot do the associated quest.
Even completing the quest on a different job will not make it available to them while on Bard.

How to increase skill level

Skill ups are highly dependent on the difference in level from the player and the target (where applicable.)
Targets far above the range of the player's skill level range are more likely to fully resist or do zero damage.
Targets near or below the player's skill level range are likely to near cap and slow down/hit the target's cap.

Melee and ranged weapons

Attacking target with respective weapon.
Weapon must do non-zero damage to target.
Damage taken to stoneskin is not considered non-zero damage.
Amount gained depends on level of target.

Shield

Blocking attacks with shield while facing target.
Amount gained depends on level of target.

Guard and Parry

Block attack with respective weapon while drawn and facing target.
Amount gained depends on level of target.

Evasion

Being hit with a physical or ranged attack.
Amount gained depends on level of target.

Divine, Elemental, Dark Magic

Casting magic on target.
Amount gained depends on level of target.

Healing and Enhancing Magic

Casting magic on target/self.
Also applicable is casting healing on undead targets.
Amount gained depends on level of target if casting on undead.

Enfeebling Magic

Casting magic on target as long as spell is not fully resisted.
Amount gained depends on level of target.

Singing, String/Wind instruments

Casting spells on respective targets.
Songs cast on enemy must not be fully resisted.
Amount gained depends on level of target if casted on enemy.

Summoning Magic

Summoning an avatar or elemental, or using Blood Pacts on respective targets.

Ninjutsu

Casting spells on respective targets.
Amount gained depends on level of target for offensive spells.

Blue Magic

Casting magic on respective targets.
Amount gained depends on level of target for offensive spells.

Note: Skills can only be increased if it is natively available to that job. Skills types gained from a sub-job will not increase from usage.
