Snowflake Mittens
These are knit from the top down, using a pretty easy cast on so no grafting/tricks needed.
- Size: toddler-size (mine were not quite 6" long and 2.5" wide"
- Yarn: MC=half a ball (110yds) Patons Classic Merino color Peacock; CC=literal scraps of
unknown white worsted (probably 4-5 yards is plenty)
- Needles: #6 dpns and #4dpns for ribbing
- Gauge: 6st/inch row gague not critical
Instructions:
- Cast on 12 stitches onto two of the larger DPSns as follows. Hold two needles parallel in
one hand. Using long tail cast on, cast one stich on each alternate needle until you have 6
on each.
- Knit 1 round even.
- Distribute stitches over 3 needles as follows:
- Needles 1 &2: 3 stitches each
- Needle 3; 6 stiches (this will the the back of mitten with pattern on it)
- Do one increase round as follows:
- N1; k1, kfb, knit to end
- N2: k to last 2 stitches, kfb, k1
- N3: k1, kfb, k to last to stitches, kfb, k1
- Repeat increase round until there are 24 stitches total
- Knit one round even followed by increase round 2 times (32 stitches total)
- Knit one round even
- Start Snowflake chart with CC as charted below on Needle 3 and knit even maintaining charted pattern for the 14 rows of pattern
- Continue knitting even until mitten is about 4" long (or wherever you want to start the thumb)
- For Left Thumb Hole:
- N1: k1, put next 6 st. on waste yarn, cast on 6 stitches to left needle and knit last stitch on needle
- N2 & N3: k even
- For Right Thumb Hole:
- N1: k even
- N2: k1, put next 6 st. on waste yarn, cast on 6 stitches to left needle and knit last stitch on needle
- N3: k even
- Continue knitting for one more inch.
- Switch to smaller needles and do k1,p1 ribbing for 2 more inches (or however long you like)
- Bind off all stitches.
- Finish Thumb: put 6 st that are on waste yarn back on larger needle. Pick up 1 stitch along side between held stitches and cast on edge above, then pick up 6 stitches along cast on edge, and 1 more in corner (14 sts). Knit even until thumb is 2 inches long.
- [k1, k2tog] 4 times, k2
- Knit one row even
- [k1, k2tog] 3 times, k1
- knit one row even
- Cut yarn leaving tail, run through remaining stitches, pull tight and weave in end on inside to finish thumb.
