Michigan Train Clubs: Here are a few clubs in Michigan that we frequent from time to time. Chi-Town Union Station: This is a relatively new layout and is privately owned. It's another two rail "O" scale layout but it's located in an old grocery store about two miles from my house and it's absolutely fantastic! The layout is currently 5,000 square feet and growing with just over one mile of hand laid track put down and another 3,500+ feet of track to still be laid. The amount of track already put down and in use makes this the largest layout of it's type in the entire United States. It's a must see layout regardless of your preference for gauge... I have posted a few pictures I took of the layout on the first day it was open to the public here. If you would like to visit the layout the address is 8275 Cooley lake road, Commerce Twp, Michigan 48382. You can call for info at 248-613-9471. Open House Dates: Hours Of Operation: Entry Fee: Detroit Union railroad: These guys have one of the coolest indoor layouts around. Its two rail "O" scale but fun anyhow. The club is located in the old movie theatre located at 104 N. Saginaw street in Holly, Michigan. I believe the layout has more than 3,500 feet of track in a 4,000 square foot area. The club also has open memberships. For information call 248-634-5811. You can also visit their web site, The Detroit Model Railroad Club. I have posted a few pictures of the layout taken during the December 2005 open house here. Open House Dates: Hours Of Operation: Entry Fee: Gratiot Valley Model Railroad Club: The guys at the Gratiot Valley club are pretty cool fellows, they put on a very nice train show twice a year on the east side of town to help fund the club. They are an HO club but I have found a couple of largescaler's in their ranks too... The club is based in Mt. Clemens, Michigan at 281 North Avenue. They meet every Monday evening after 7:30 and they are always looking for new members. If you are interested in seeing their layout or joining up, call 810-468-4877. They also have a pretty nice web site, just click on the link to visit them, Gratiot Valley RR. Michigan Small Scale Live Steamers: This is a small group of great
guys who've been bitten by another type of bug, live steam. I was only around them for a
few minutes with my son and guess what, we both caught the live steam bug too! And we are
now currently looking for our first live steam engines... If you have a minute stop by the
MISSLS web site and see what the fun is all about! |
