General Notes:
In 1880, (7 yrs old) Franklin lived in Summerfield Michigan with the family
Franklin Cronawert grew up in southwest Michigan. After starting a family in Michigan, Franklin heard news from the Northwest via his brother in-law, Earl James Sackett, about the high wages that were being paid in the Gold Mines around Orient, Washington. In addition, homestead land was available in the area to farm as a backup means of support. In 1905, Franklin journeyed to Stevens County and hired into the Easter Sunday Mine (see mine-map link below) about 8 miles NNE of Orient, Washington. His job was to haul freight from the town of Bossburg, Washington on the east side of the Columbia river to the mine, a trip of about 20 miles. He found a 160 homestead plot on the south slope of Hungry Hill, built a cabin, and moved in the 4 children and his wife Florence "Flodie" (Hall) Cronawert. Franklin raised cattle on the lush grass of Hungry Hill and supplemented his income by driving a 4 mule team freight wagon hauling gold ore from the nearby First Thought Mine to the railway siding in Orient Washington, roughly a 7 mile round trip; see map link below.
