The first attempt at casting, click here

This is the completed furnace ready to have the lining cured. I used the basic design from David Gingery's book, but enlarged it and beefed it up a bit. The outside dimensions are 18" high by 15 ½" in diameter. The inside measures 12" in height by 8 ¼" in diameter. The outside is 16 gauge sheetmetal and the inside is 3000 degree castable insulating refractory cement. There is a foot pedal which lifts the lid which can then be swung to the side for skimming and adding material to the crucible. The body is lifted by an electric hoist for removal of the crucible for pouring. The burner was built using a design by Larry Zoeller and can be found on his website.

The fancy handle is my first attempt at blacksmithing...an upcoming project :)

Pretty hot

The blocks are extra plinths of refractory material which the crucible will sit on.

The crucible is made from a piece of 5" schedule 40 pipe, and holds about
3 quarts.
