The Rebuild Part 8
85+ 6.2 Glow Controller Conversion!
Here is the 85+ Glow controller I purchaced from DIS www.dieselpage.com and the wire
harness I got at the dealer, but you may beable to scrounge a 5
terminal weatherpack connector from a junkyard.
To wire this new controller/relay in is simple. From left to right: A B
C D E
Terminal A - goes to Ground
Terminal B - goes to +12v when ignition is in the Run position.
Terminal C - goes to the glow plug side of the relay. If desired,
putting a resistor inline here can lengthen the glow time. (I believe a
1W 50-100 ohm is what one person reccommended)
Terminal D - goes to +12v when ignition is in the Start position.
Terminal E - not used
Left stud - to battery
Right stud - to glow plugs, terminal C, and your dashboard "Diesel
Wait" lamp
If your old system is working, great! But if you have problems and are
looking at shelling out some bucks, upgrade. Chances are this
relay/controller is 2/3 the price of the controller you are replacing.
It should save a lot of headaches. Just mount this where your old relay
was, and disconnect or remove the old controller in the manifold.
Why is this controller better?
-reliability
-simplicity
-availability
-price
-"Afterglow" - This controller after giving a normal glow cycle, will
turn on for a second every 5 seconds. for about a minute after start.
This helps get a cold engine running smoother quicker.
This relay should never be used with the 6v glow plugs used on the
quick or pulse glow systems. As part of any glow plug system work,
switing to PTC (positive temperature coefficient) glow plugs should be
part of making the system more reliable. Those old plugs when they blow
can leave a tip broken inside that can rattle around the cylinder until
it goes out the exhaust or until you loose a cylinder. An expensive
situation...
