Almost all measurement programs require a duplex soundcard. They need a loop-back circuit to calibrate the soundcard to the software, and to simultaneously send and measure the playback of test tones.

This is most simple flowchart I've found for wiring your test equipment to your PC and equalizer. 

If you're using a mic/mic preamp combo instead of the RS meter, the output from the mic preamp follows the same path as the output from the RS meter in this chart.

If you're using an external soundcard, the in/out connections to the external sound card are the same as the internal card shown below.
