On July 4th 2005 we were not looking for a horse. But, I was taking pictures at a
local farm of riders taking lessons.
A woman there mentioned that she had a mini horse for sale and that he would be perfect for my son, Loren.
I said "No, minis are too small. "She said "Well, he is 34 inches tall and stout." I said "No, minis are too small."
She said "He is totally kid safe." I said "No, minis are too small.
She said "He's buckskin." I said no they are too small, Loren will out grow him fast."
She said "He is $350." I said "Let me call my husband." So, later that day, we drove out to see this
"buckskin stout mini that was kid safe". Well, he was tied to a tree and could barley walk.
His feet were very long and turned under making it hard for him to walk and he was in terrible pain.
The lady who had him said she got him at an auction in South Dakota and had only had him for a few weeks.
She was going to take him back in a few days and auction him off again if she did not get a buyer for him.
She said the pony was foundered. That is very bad, and made me a little nervous about buying him.
But Loren latched right on to the little pony and led him around, the mini following behind as best he could.
Loren fell down in front of the him a few times and did not get stepped on. David put Loren up on his back and
the horse dealer led him around the yard, over a tarp and he did not flinch. So, we wrote a check and came back
later to pick him up. Three days later the vet was out and gave him all his shots and see how bad the founder was.
She looked at his feet and said he had an abscess, not founder. What a relief! That would be easy to treat and recover from.
So, David trimmed him and he has not been lame since. Rocky truly loves Loren and although Loren will out grow him,
I am training him to pull a buggy so we can still have a job for him. He's a keeper! |
