Saturday
morning, Sept.15,2001, 10:00 AM.
Jeff-KD6TOJ and I started from a point just outside of Sonora. My 1st
bearing, 2-degrees, was a little left of the actual direction.
Follow the 'blue highlight', this was our actual
track as recorded by the Garmin StreetPilot-III.
Our 2nd bearing, 60-degrees, in Columbia, put us on
the correct Forest Road. Credit goes to Jeff-KD6TOJ, for picking
Italian Bar Rd.
As we approached the Fox, we received a lot of
reflections at a critical juncture. Having four or five Forest Roads
to choose from, we drove up road '3N03'. Taking our 3rd and last
bearing, 120-degrees, it was quite clear we needed to turn around and
head east on Road '3N11'.

Jeff-KD6TOJ
was gracious and took the left photo of me driving up the trail to
find a turn around point.
The right photo shows the Fox transmitter setup by
Rich-KN6FW. 50-watts into a 3-element quad. Effective radiated power,
500-watts.

Equipment.
1) AHHA Doppler,
very important piece of equipment. Particularly the multi-path meter,
which told us when we could take a reliable BEAM bearing.
2) Arrow Beam,
another important piece of equipment.
3) Garmin
StreetPilot-III, even more important than the beam. This GPS
street level mapping device had all the fire, forest and trails mapped
out for us to follow.
4) Icom IC-R3,
U-R-Here radio even worked with Rich's 500-watt transmitter. Stepping
through the four internal attenuators, I was able to determine we were
within a mile of the Fox when the IC-R3, in att-4, sounded off as we
approached the transmitter. |

I
wonder if the posted sign, "No Hunting", means no
transmitter hunting? |

We
had a long wait for the rest of the hunters to show up, about four
hours worth of waiting. |

Joe a local to Sonora and hunting this very
difficult transmitter with a "Tape-Measure" beam. Very excellent
Joe, good job.

Back
into Sonora and all the traffic.
See you at the next "Challenge
Hunt", Sept.29,2001. I was told this one will be a little
north of this Sonora hunt and not so deep into the forest. Henry-KF6PCE will
be the Fox.
