US Navy Scrapbook

Between July 1985 and September 1990 I served in the United States Navy. I went through boot camp in San Diego, which is where I subsequentally ended up being stationed. I was assigned to Beachmaster Unit One, an amphibious assault and salvage team. Beachmaster Unit One is responsible for deploying to the beach, securing the beach from opposing forces, and offloading Marines and equipment from ships located offshore. In the event that jeeps, tanks, or boats become stuck or aground during this procedure, Beachmasters tow and/or rescue the personnel and craft. The primary vehicle utilized by Beachmaster Unit One is a Larc, an amphibious boat which travels both on land and water. It resembles a boat on wheels.
The Navy was both a great and a miserable experience, but I never regret it. During my enlistment I spent time in Korea, the Philippines, Hawaii, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Guam, and Japan. My role in Beachmaster Unit One was what was known as a Larc Commander - meaning I was the one that drove the Larcs. When my enlistment finally ended I was a Petty Officer Third Class and was supervising beach operations.
I visited Korea more than anywhere else. I believe I served there something like six months total. In these pictures here we were engaged in Colonel Blitz, a massive amphibious exercise staged in unison with South Korean Marines.
Beachmasters spend their time on operations living in tent cities equipped with everything necessary for portable command posts. Here is a picture of me "at home" in the Philippines in 1989. I spent a great deal of time there as well and absolutely loved it.
