Jacob Amos Biography and Civil War Narrative

Jacob Amos was born in Hesse Darmstadt (Germany) about 1826. Around 1850 he married Elizabeth, born in Ohio about 1835. Early in their marriage they lived in Indiana; they moved to Minnesota about 1856. Jacob and Elizabeth had at least 8 children. Before the Civil War, five children were born: Jacob (born about 1851-52 in Indiana), George (born about 1855-56 in Indiana), Louisa (born about 1856-57 in Minnesota), Rosa/Rosina (born about 1858-59 in Minnesota), and Philip/Philipp (born November 1862 in Minnesota)

Jacob Amos enlisted as a Private in Company E of the 5th Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota, on February 5, 1862, at about age 36. He was appointed Sergeant on April 2, 1862. While serving as Sergeant, Amos's Company E participated in the
Siege of Corinth, Mississippi (May 26-30, 1862), the Battle of Iuka, Mississippi (September 19, 1862), the Battle of Corinth (October 3-4, 1862), Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign (November 1862 to January 1863), and the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi (May 18-July 4, 1863). On August 2, 1863, Amos was promoted to First Lieutenant of Company E. During the time Amos served as First Lieutenant, Company E participated in the Meridian Campaign (February 3-March 2, 1864), the Red River Campaign (March 10-May 22, 1864), the Battle of Pleasant Hill (April 9, 1864), action at Old River Lake (June 6, 1864), an exhaustive march through Arkansas and Missouri in pursuit of Confederate General Price (September 17-November 15, 1864), and the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee (December 15-16, 1864). Following the death of Captain Henry Stasson at the Battle of Nashville, First Lieutenant Amos was promoted to Captain of Company E. He was mustered out with the regiment on September 6, 1865.

Following the war, Captain Jacob Amos returned to Minnesota and his family, where three more children were born to Jacob and Elizabeth: Franklin/Frank (born about 1865-66), Carl/Charles (born about 1866-67), and Ida (born about 1875). In both the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Censuses, Jacob Amos is listed as a Stone Mason living in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.

Jacob Amos died February 15, 1889, in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1900, Elizabeth was living in St. Paul with her daughter, Ida. In 1920, Elizabeth was still living with Ida who had since married Fred Koch.
