James Baillie Biography

James J. Baillie was born about 1825 in Scotland. His mother was also born in Scotland, but his Scottish father, James, (an engineer) was born in New York about 1796. James (junior) married Matilda, born in England about 1822.

James served as a Private in Company A of the 5th Minnesota during the latter part of the Civil War, enlisting November 1, 1864, and being mustered out with his company on September 6, 1865.

At the time of the 1870 U.S. Census, 44-year-old James and his family lived in Minnetonka, Hennepin County, Minnesota. James was a farmer, and his father (age 71) and his son, William (born about 1850 in Pennsylvania), lived with them. In 1880, James and Matilda lived in Minneapolis, where James worked as a painter. His father (now age 84) still lived with them as did an 11-year-old daughter, Nillie, born in New York.
