Killian Barberich Biography and Civil War Narrative

Killian Barberich was born in New York about 1838 to John and Catherine Barberich. John had been born in Baden (Germany) about 1802, and Catherine was from Bavaria (born about 1814). By 1852, the John Barberich family had moved to Minnesota. At the time of the 1860 U.S. census, the John Barberich household consisted of John (age 58), his wife Catherine (age 46), and seven children: son Killian (age 21), son Frederic (age 18, born in New York), daughter Catherine (age 14, born in New York), son George (age 12, born in Wisconsin?), daughter Theresia (age 9, born in Wisconsin?), daughter Sara (age 8, born in Minnesota), and daughter Mary (age 2, born in Minnesota). They were a farming family living west of Lake Minnetonka in the township of Minnetrista, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Killian Barberich enlisted in Company E of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment on February 19, 1862, in Hennepin County.
His  residence was credited as Watertown, Carver County, Minnesota. Serving in Company E, Private Barberich went through training at Fort Snelling until ordered south in May where his company reported to General John Pope at Corinth, Mississippi, on May 24. The Company was immediately put into action at the Battle of Farmington (part of the Siege of Corinth) on May 28. They were present but held in reserve at the Battle of Iuka (Mississippi) on September 19, 1862, and then fought in the Battle of Corinth on October 3-4, 1862. In 1863 the 5th Minnesota participated in the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi (May 18 - July 4).

Early in 1864, Killian Barberich re-enlisted as a veteran in the 5th Minnesota and then participated in the Red River Campaign (March 10 - May 22). After receiving a veteran's furlough from June 17 to August 17, Barberich rejoined the regiment which then participated in Mower's  expedition to Brownsville, Arkansas (September 2-10), a pursuit of Confederate General Price across the state of Missouri (September 17-November 15), and the Battle of Nashville (December 15-16). On the second day of the Battle of Nashville, Private Killian Barberich was mortally wounded, likely during the charge on Shy's Hill late in the afternoon. He died five days later on December 21, 1864.
