Rudolph Borgersrode in the Civil War

Rudolph Borgersrode was born about 1811 in Prussia (Germany). By 1852 he was in either Illinois or Missouri where his wife, Caroline, gave birth to his son, Otto. Caroline was born about 1827 in Baden (Germany). Between 1852 and 1854, Rudolph, Caroline, and Otto moved to Minnesota. In 1860, Rudolph (age 49) was living and farming in Acoma Township, McLeod County, Minnesota. His household included his wife, Caroline (age 33) and four children: Otto (age 8), Rudolph (age 6), Emma (age 3), and Emil (age 8 months). The youngest three children were all born in Minnesota.

Borgersrode served for about a year and 3 months in the Civil War. He began as 2nd Lieutenant in Company B of the 4th Minnesota Regiment, inducted on October 2, 1861, and resigning on April 5, 1862. On April 30, 1862, he began serving as Colonel of the 5th Minnesota. He resigned on August 31, 1862.

Following his service in the 5th Minnesota, Borgersrode returned to and resided in Winsted, McLeod County, Minnesota.

The 1890 Census of Veterans lists Rudolph Borgersrode as still living in Winsted, Minnesota. His cause for pension is described as "??? of right ??? and loss of thumb of right hand."

Colonel von Borgersrode died March 19, 1910, in McLeod County, Minnesota, and was buried in McLeod County. Caroline died October 28, 1914, in McLeod County, Minnesota.

In 1920, Rudolph's 68-year-old son, Otto, was living in Winsted, with his wife, Anna (age 70), and 4 adult children: Rudolph (age 36), Amelia (age 38), Emil (age 32), and Eola (age 30).

Colonel Rudolph Borgersrode's sword is now on display at the City Hall in Winsted.
