Francis G. Brown Biography and Civil War Narrative

Francis G. Brown was born about 1831. At age 31, in January 1862, he enlisted in the Union Army and was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant of Company K of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. As Quartermaster, Francis Brown was responsible for supplying and provisioning the troops. On July 24, 1862--perhaps at Camp Clear Creek, Mississippi--Brown was promoted to Second Lieutenant of Company K. A year later, on July 15, 1863, at age 32 he was promoted to First Lieutenant, replacing William Organ who had resigned and then died on the same day, possibly while encamped at Big Black River. At the close of the war, Francis G. Brown was made Regimental Quartermaster on March 18, 1865, replacing William B. McGrorty who had resigned September 15, 1864. Thomas Mogan replaced Brown as First Lieutenant. Brown was mustered out with the regiment on September 6, 1865.
