Luther E. Biography and Civil
War Narrative
Luther E. Clark was born about
1830, and prior joining the Union Army he lived in St. Paul, Ramsey
County, Minnesota. The 1860
U.S. Census records an "L. E. Clark," age 30, living in the 1st Ward of
St. Paul. He was born in New York, and his occupation was "Dry Good
mcht." He lived with his 22-year-old wife, "H. H." (born in Michigan)
and his 10-month-old son, Williard (born in Minnesota).
Clark was Captain of Company I for a period of two weeks: from the
organization of the 5th Minnesota Regiment on April 30, 1862, until
they left for Mississippi on May 13, 1862, when he was discharged per
order. Clark was replaced by Adam S. Lybe who had been Second
Lieutenant during that same two-week period. The First Lieutenant (who
was not promoted to Captain)
was Patrick Ryan.
