5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment

Captains: Francis Hall, Timothy J. Sheehan

Company C was recruited primarily from Freeborn and Faribault counties. The company moved to Fort Ripley, north of Little Falls, Minnesota, in March, 1862, serving garrison duty there until November, 1862. On June 19-28, a detachment of the company marched to Fort Ridgely, near New Ulm, Minnesota, under Lieutenant Timothy J. Sheehan, joining Company B of the 5th Minnesota. Companies C and B marched to the Sioux Agency on the Yellow Medicine River June 30 to July 2 to preserve order during the annuity payment to Indians. They were involved in the Sioux outbreak of August 1862 including the defense of Fort Ridgely on August 20-22. The detachment returned to Fort Ripley September 18. Company C rejoined the 5th Minnesota Regiment near Oxford, Mississippi, December 12, 1862.
