John Ess in the Civil War

Johann Ess was born December 23, 1828, in Bavaria (Germany).  In 1860, he and his wife, Christina, and daughter, Victoria, were living in Chanhassen, Carver County, Minnesota, where he farmed. Christina (born in Darmstadt, Germany) was age 29, and Victoria was 7 months.

During the Battle of Nashville (December 15-16, 1864) Ess received a gun shot wound in the left arm.

In 1880, the Ess family was still living in Chanhassen, and John was still a farmer. The household consisted of John (age 51), his wife Christina (age 50), daughter Victoria (age 20), and sons Joseph (age 18), Michael (age 14), and George (age 11). All of the children were born in Minnesota.

John Ess died July 29, 1887, at the age of 58. His obituary was published in the Weekly Valley Herald on August 4, 1887. Nearly 12 years later, his wife Christina died. Her obituary was also published in Weekly Valley Herald on April 20, 1899.
